Folder Metadata (FolderMeta) Directory Metadata Manager (Tags for Folders) Description The Program is designed to assign properties to folders that are displayed in the columns of a customizable table view of Windows Explorer. Usage Assign and edit the desired properties of folders through the Explorer context menu, as a bonus, the assignment of Nicknames for files is available. A folder or file Nickname lets you display an alternative name for an object in Explorer without changing its actual name in the file system. Unlike the actual name of an object in the file system, the Nickname can contain characters that are not allowed in usual names. Interoperability The functionality of the Program is provided by the native capabilities of the Windows operating system family. Full support for Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10/11 and corresponding server versions of operating systems through the capabilities of the Desktop.ini file. Due to this, the transfer of folders and files between file systems with native support in Windows (FAT/FAT32/NTFS/exFAT/ReFS) occurs with the preservation of the assigned properties, and to display them on the target system, you do not need to install the Program. Partial support for Windows 2000/XP and corresponding server versions of operating systems through alternate data streams (ADS) in NTFS through the Summary tab of the standard Properties dialog for folders. At the same time, property management via the Explorer context menu is not available for folders, but Nicknames can be assigned to objects with the restriction that Nicknames are stored in the Registry and their cache can be preempted. Features Search in Explorer by properties, and by real names for Nicknames, when activating the following settings in the Folder Options via the Control Panel: • Always search file names and contents — required parameter; • Don't use the index when searching in file folders for system files — optional parameter. It is possible to edit a set of properties assigned to folders through the Explorer context menu. It is enough to specify the required parameters in the PropKey.ini configuration file and apply the Change function to the Program in the Programs and Features snap-in (Add or Remove Programs) through the Control Panel. To simplify the addition of new properties, the PropKey.h header file is present in the Program installation folder, as well as the PropSys.dll.rus.rc and PropSys.dll.enu.rc resource files from the corresponding libraries. Specifics The context menu of the Program does not require localization and allows you to simultaneously assign properties to up to 100 objects (limitation of operating systems). The Cancel and Close buttons when editing object properties perform a quick clear of the property. In this case, the line with the corresponding value in the Desktop.ini file is escaped instead of being deleted. If you want to delete a property, you should assign it an empty value and click the OK button. If you want to leave the value unchanged, just use the OK button. Deleting the properties of all child objects clears only the first nesting level of the selected folders, and does not affect comment lines in the Desktop.ini file. Limitations Due to the difference in the principles of implementing functionality in old and new generations of operating systems, there is no forward and backward portability of folder properties between operating systems. In 2000/XP operating systems and corresponding server versions of Windows, alternative data streams for folders are not transferred when copying or moving such folders between volumes with any file systems by design, but are saved only during operations within the same NTFS volume. Problems • UNC-paths and network folders are only supported when mapped as network drives with a letter assignment. • If you want to use the percent sign in the value of an object property, you must specify it twice. • When assigning properties, the quotation mark is replaced with two consecutive apostrophes, keep this in mind when searching. • Assigning Nicknames sometimes requires a forced Refresh of the contents of a window or pressing the F5 key on your keyboard. • Assigning Nicknames to files in drive roots does not have an effect on all operating system families. • It is impossible to assign properties through the Explorer context menu, the values of which contain Unicode characters that are not presented in the system language code space, as well as equal sign and circumflex accent.
