On Heritage, Benin-born Lionel Loueke takes a more electric approach than on previous releases, which mostly featured his acoustic, nylon-string guitar. This change is immediately felt on the opening "Ifê," beginning with the muted notes of an acoustic steel-stringed guitar whose sound resembles a kalimba (thumb piano). Loueke is backed solely by his trio (rounded out by bassist Derrick Hodge and drummer Mark Guiliana) here, and plays a dexterous solo with the help of a pitch bender pedal. Co-producer and pianist Robert Glasper joins him on various tunes, but the gentle "Hope" (co-written by Glasper and Loueke) is the first to stand out thanks to its simple structure that gives much opportunity for free improvisation. The wordless vocal duet between Loueke and Gretchen Parlato gives the tune a dream-like feel. Glasper's "Tribal Dance" has all of the pianist's trademarks, but also gives a lot of freedom for the musicians to improvise around the melody, while Loueke's highly syncopated "Farafina" has a more intricate structure that also gives much space for moments of brilliance from the bandleader and his trio. Another notable track is "African Ship," a short syncopated tune that features Glasper's intricate piano grooves. Loueke adds various vocal effects as the pianist improvises freely around the melody. The chemistry between the two musicians is quite evident, and that can also be said about the other participants on the disc, especially on Glasper's "Bayyinah," featuring individual moments from all four band members and closing the disc with the same excitement as the first track. Loueke and Glasper are among a handful of new voices bringing fresh sounds to contemporary jazz, and helping usher a whole new audience to the genre thanks to their creativity, technique and eagerness to break new ground. The historical details surrounding the recording session that became Buddy & the Juniors are almost as entertaining -- and oddly satisfying -- as the music itself. Released on Blue Thumb in 1970 on multi-colored wax, this session, were it not for a very real economic necessity due to Buddy Guy's feud with Vanguard Records, would never have happened. According to producer Michael Cuscuna's liner notes on the CD reissue, Vanguard wouldn't pick up the tab for Guy to fly to New York to mix an album he'd cut with Junior Mance and Gary Bartz -- also produced by Cuscuna. Being an ever-enterprising genius, Cuscuna pitched the idea for a recording between Guy, Mance, and Junior Wells to Blue Thumb label boss Bob Krasnow; he jumped. The all-acoustic Buddy & the Juniors was recorded on December 18 of 1969, and on December 19 they mixed this album and the Vanguard date! While an acoustic pairing between Guy and Wells is a natural one, adding jazz pianist Mance -- a Chicago native whose early influences were the boogie-woogie recordings of Meade "Lux" Lewis and Albert Ammons -- to the mix was risky in terms of interpersonal dynamics, but in retrospect, proved a brilliant idea. The proceedings are informal and raw with plenty of fireworks. The first two tracks -- "Talkin' 'Bout Women Obviously" and "Riffin' [aka A Motif Is Just a Riff]" -- were the last two recorded. They're blazing, hairy, on-the-spot improvisational duets between Wells and Guy: the former offers lyrics in a back-and-forth extemporaneous style; the latter develops in intensity as it goes on. The playing by Guy and Wells is inspirational. "Buddy's Blues," the first interplay of the trio, has Mance digging deeply into the Otis Spann tradition, just rolling inside it, accenting lines, punching chords, and offering beautiful tags to Wells' harmonica lines. Wells' vocal on "(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man" meets Guy's six-string head-on, with Mance comping and popping a melodic fill underneath each sung phrase. He introduces "Five Long Years" as a piano blues that gets countered in exponential grit by Guy's vocal and Wells' punchy harp; he shuffles, fills, trills, and blows straight at the the keyboard, creating a forceful gale of dialogue. On the slippery boogie-woogie set closer, Wells' "Ain't No Need," the listener grasps the deep communication of this trio. Никакого редактирования, способного отрицательно сказаться на качестве звучания материала НЕ ПРИМЕНЯЛОСЬ!
 
Скомпилировано "non-stop", пауз нет, треки плавно переходят друг в друга.
 
Что-то немало в последнее время довольно хороших кавер-версий мировых хитов подвернулось под горячую руку - решил наваять новый сборник. Лично мне сборник очень пришёлся - интересно даже угадывать, что же является первоисточником... Сборники подобного плана у меня уже были, но состояли не совсем из одних только каверов. В этом случае даже в треклисте указал на первоисточники, хотя в некоторых случаях, сказать кто же был первым исполнителем немного затруднительно, как в случае с песнями "Sealed With A Kiss" - наиболее известна она стала в исполнении австралийца Джейсона Донована, но первым были всё таки группа The Four Voices. Агнета, бывшая солистка группы АББА, исполнила её просто отлично! Ferrante & Teicher, кажется, исполнили тему "Последнее танго в Париже" в оригинальном фильме. На всякий случай написал просто, что это саундтрек.  "Besame Mucho" исполняли столько народу, что указал просто автора этого шедевра - Consuelo Velazquez Torres. Путаница страшная... Все представленные "перепевки" сборника не имеют какого-то определённого стиля, есть как акустические варианты, так и синтезированные, сэмплерные версии. Есть вещица, вообще полностью воспроизведённая человеческими голосами, вместе с аккомпаниментом - "Voulez-Vous" (АBBA). Как обычно это делаю, постарался сделать "напор" сборника постоянно увеличивающимся от начала к концу, получилось довольно неплохо, мне самому нравится. кстати, "Is This Love" пришлось немного сократить, иначе бы не влезла. Поразительно интересна версия отличной песни "My Baby Just Cares for Me"! И ещё. Не исключаю реакции типа "зачем же поганить такие хиты, раньше всё было гораздо лучше". Попробуйте взглянуть на сборник как на музыку, которая немного освежит в памяти отличные композиции, бывшие в своё время ну очень известными...

The influence of Charlie Parker can be heard in virtually every modern jazz musician, particularly players of the alto saxophone. Although considered to be one of "Bird's children," Lou Donaldson absorbed and synthesized other pre-Parker influences, such as Johnny Hodges and Benny Carter. This recording marks a period in his development prior to a stylistic shift away from bop and toward a stronger rhythm and blues emphasis. Three up-tempo tunes are pure bebop; the remaining number is a medium blues in B flat, quite characteristic of the hard bop period. The front line on this set includes Donald Byrd and Curtis Fuller; the rhythm section is Sonny Clark, George Joyner, and Art Taylor. Overall, Lou Takes Off breaks no new musical ground, but it is a solid, swinging session of high-caliber playing. Weather Report's biggest-selling album is that ideal thing, a popular and artistic success -- and for the same reasons. For one thing, Joe Zawinul revealed an unexpectedly potent commercial streak for the first time since his Cannonball Adderley days, contributing what has become a perennial hit, "Birdland." Indeed, "Birdland" is a remarkable bit of record-making, a unified, ever-developing piece of music that evokes, without in any way imitating, a joyous evening on 52nd St. with a big band. The other factor is the full emergence of Jaco Pastorius as a co-leader; his dancing, staccato bass lifting itself out of the bass range as a third melodic voice, completely dominating his own ingenious "Teen Town" (where he also plays drums!). By now, Zawinul has become WR's de facto commander in the studio; his colorful synthesizers dictate the textures, his conceptions are carefully planned, with little of the freewheeling improvisation of only five years before. Wayne Shorter's saxophones are now reticent, if always eloquent, beams of light in Zawinul's general scheme while Alex Acuña shifts ably over to the drums and Manolo Badrena handles the percussion. McCoy Tyner has fronted many mid-sized ensembles, but this one ranks with the very best he has led. As violinist John Blake jives and jousts with alto and soprano saxophonist Joe Ford and the incendiary tenor saxophonist George Adams, Tyner realizes a perfectly balanced, extroverted, compatible and utterly unique front line. It enables him to offer some of the most remarkable, memorable and powerful music of his career. It all starts with the magnificent opener "Horizon," which goes though a variety of dynamic rhythm changes, clarion calls, tinkling or rumbling piano set-ups prior to the band bursting loose, Afro-Cuban incursions, concise, inspired solos, and all powered by absolute perfect rhythm navigating from drummer Al Foster aside colorful percussive inserts by Guilherme Franco. It is one of the greatest single compositions of Tyner's career...sheer genius, period. "Just Feelin'" has been a piece that endures, played by Tyner in alternate trio and big-band settings as well. A singsong line courtesy of the vibrant tenor of Adams and Ford's plaintive, angular soprano radiates warmth for Blake's soaring violin to feed off of, as bright as any super nova. Blake's composition "Woman of Tomorrow, " with the violinist, both horn players switching to flute, Tyner and bass anchor Charles Fambrough is a textbook clinic exercise in beauty. "Motherland" chugs along in fierce modal revelry, powered by the rock-solid bass of Fambrough, with Adams getting to the heart of it in his typical fiery fashion and Franco urging him on playing the shekere, while "One for Honor" with just piano-bass-drums is a stone-cold hard bop wonder. The front cover has a silhouette of Tyner's face superimposed as lightning strikes fronting a raging thunderstorm, a great piece of art, as is this extraordinary recording, which cannot come more highly recommended. ~ Michael G.
