Profile Records hoped that Run-D.M.C.'s fourth album, Tougher Than Leather, would exceed the Beastie Boys' quintuple-platinum status, but unfortunately, the group's popularity had decreased by 1988. One of Run-D.M.C.'s strong points -- its love of rock & roll -- was also its undoing in hip-hop circles. Any type of crossover success tends to be viewed suspiciously in the hood, and hardcore hip-hoppers weren't overly receptive to "Miss Elaine," "Papa Crazy," "Mary, Mary," and other rap-rock delights found on the album. Thanks largely to rock fans, this album did go platinum for sales exceeding one million copies -- which ironically, Profile considered a disappointment. Run-D.M.C. and King of Rock had established the crew's fusion of hip-hop and hard rock, but that sound didn't blossom until Raising Hell, partially due to the presence of Rick Rubin as producer. Rubin loved metal and rap in equal measures and he knew how to play to the strengths of both, while slipping in commercial concessions that seemed sly even when they borrowed from songs as familiar as "My Sharona" (heard on "It's Tricky"). Along with longtime Run-D.M.C. producer Russell Simmons, Rubin blew down the doors of what hip-hop could do with Raising Hell because it reached beyond rap-rock and found all sorts of sounds outside of it. Sonically, there is simply more going on in this album than any previous rap record -- more hooks, more drum loops (courtesy of ace drum programmer Sam Sever), more scratching, more riffs, more of everything. Where other rap records, including Run-D.M.C.'s, were all about the rhythm, this is layered with sounds and ideas, giving the music a tangible flow. But the brilliance of this record is that even with this increased musical depth, it still rocks as hard as hell, and in a manner that brought in a new audience. Of course, the cover of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way," complete with that band's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry, helped matters considerably, since it gave an audience unfamiliar with rap an entry point, but if it were just a novelty record, a one-shot fusion of rap and rock, Raising Hell would never have sold three million copies. Run-D.M.C. were the Beatles of rap because they signaled a cultural and musical change for the music, ushering it into its accepted form; neither group originated the music, but they gave it the shape known today. But, no matter how true and useful the comparison is, it is also a little misleading, because it implies that Run-D.M.C. also were a melodic, accessible group, bringing in elements from all different strands of popular music. No, Run-D.M.C.'s expanded their music by making it tough and spare, primarily by adapting the sound and attitude of hard rock to hip-hop. Prior to this, rap felt like a block party -- the beats were funky and elastic, all about the groove. Run-D.M.C. hit hard. The production is tough and minimal, built on relentless drum machines and Jam Master Jay's furious scratching, mixing in a guitar riff or a keyboard hit on occasion. It is brutal urban music, and Run and D.M.C.'s forceful, muscular rhymes match the music. Where other MCs sounded cheerful, Run and D.M.C. prowl and taunt the listener, sounding as if they were a street gang. And while much of the record is devoted to braggadocio, boasting, and block parties, Run-D.M.C. also addressed grittier realities of urban life, giving this record both context and thematic weight. All of this -- the music, the attitude, the words, the themes -- marked a turning point for rap, and it's impossible to calculate Run-D.M.C.'s influence on all that came afterward. Years later, some of the production may sound a bit of its time, but the music itself does not because music this powerful and original always retains its impact and force as music. It at least seemed eventful whenever “Soldier of Love,” released to radio a couple months prior to the album of the same title, was heard over the airwaves. Even with its brilliantly placed lyrical allusions to hip-hop past and present and its mature sound, the single stuck out on stations aimed at teens and twentysomethings, as well as points on the dial that court an older audience. It was the most musical and organic, while also the most dramatic yet least bombastic, song in rotation. Crisp snare rolls, cold guitar stabs, and at least a dozen other elements were deployed with tremendous economy, suspensefully ricocheting off one another as Sade Adu rewrote “Love Is a Battlefield” with scarred, assured defiance. While the song was an indication of its parent album’s reliance upon organic instrumentation — the band’s use of synthesized textures and programming is greatly diminished — it merely hinted at the dark, even fatalist, depth of heartache conveyed throughout the set. On “Bring Me Home,” Adu is content in resignation (“Send me to slaughter/Lay me on the railway line”), while on “The Moon and the Sky,” she projects a bruised and angered bewilderment (“You lay me down and left me for the lions”). The focus at least switches temporarily to a loved one on “In Another Time,” in what resembles a love letter to (what is likely) a young daughter mistreated by members of both sexes (“Their whispers are hailstones in your face”; “Soon they’ll mean nothing to you”). His insistence on grappling with the realities of now also meant that he never resigned himself to playing traditional chord changes, preferring to rely as heavily on funk, hip-hop, soul, and rock as the blues themselves. Such eclecticism gels into a recognizable signature on Have You Lost Your Mind Yet?, the third album Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz has released as Fantastic Negrito since 2016. Here, Fantastic Negrito leans heavily on Prince for both his kinetic funk workouts and slow jams, so much so that the album can sometimes seem like a sideways tribute to the Purple One. He dips into paisley-flavored rock in the vein of Sly Stone on "Platypus Dipster" and reels in E-40 for an interpolation of the Bay Area rapper's classic "Captain Save a Hoe," but these are accents on an album that's so firmly grounded in funk, it only seems to hint at the blues. So who better to pay tribute to Hendrix at an August 2007 London Experience Hendrix launch of Hendrix's Live at Monterey reissued DVD than the veteran Moore? And to add more gravitas to the post-DVD presentation concert, Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell and Band of Gypsys bassist Billy Cox joined Moore for three tunes near the end of the 80-minute-long set. The DVD, Blu-Ray, and CD (all available separately) capture the amped-up excitement of the night as Moore and his regular touring duo tear though some of Hendrix's biggest hits with the ferocity that Moore brings to every gig. The only criticism is the set list, which trots out the usual suspects of Hendrix's early catalog ("Fire," "Foxy Lady," "Purple Haze," "The Wind Cries Mary") which are overplayed. Whether Moore had control over that or was instructed to play tunes that hewed closely to those from the Monterey Hendrix performance is unclear. But even though he doesn't exactly make them his own, the Irish guitarist brings plenty of sweat and intensity to those warhorses. He also adds the less well-known "I Don't Live Today," which, in light of Moore's untimely 2011 passing, is strangely and sadly prophetic. An emotional six-minute reading of "Angel," prefaced by a frantic guitar improv instrumental oddly named "My Angel" that displays Moore's chops, gives him a chance to get sensitive on one of Hendrix's most ghostly and beautiful tunes. The "blues" in the album's title is spotlighted as Mitchell and Cox kick off their 25-minute guest appearance with a fiery, 11-minute "Red House," arguably the night's highlight. Cox's basslines find a deep groove (he also sings the song) and Moore is clearly in his element, whipping off solos that shift from sweet and jazzy to biting and raw. The threesome had only rehearsed once the day before, and that lack of preparation nearly sinks "Stone Free," also sung by Cox, where things get a little too ragged. But they bounce back for a punchy, nine-minute "Hey Joe" that captures the spirit of Hendrix's version while providing Moore a platform for his own six-string acrobatics that organically build to a crescendo even Hendrix would have applauded. The DVD shows how much the trio is enjoying itself, but even the audio is evidence that Moore is in his natural habitat with this material, and playing with Hendrix's sidemen is clearly a thrill. He brings back his own band for a closing ten-minute "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" that puts an exclamation point on an already outstanding performance. It's usually a soprano but sometimes he will go larger and play the tenor. Occasionally, Law will try his hand at creating funk. It usually comes out with a jazzy feel to it (which is fine with me). The problem is that his detractors seem to want him to play only traditional jazz all the time. Which he is very good at. When he doesn't play jazz, they tend to throw a fit or two and talk about how commercial he has become. Meanwhile, there will be a traditional jazz song or two that's brilliantly composed, arranged and most importantly, played. This is one of those times. Identity may not be Laws' greatest album but it's not the worse either. What Identity is, or seems to be, is his VIBE at the time. If he feels like making a carbon copy of a soul classic, it's perfectly fine. But it's just not jazz. Take this album for what it's worth. This is White's third album of all-original material following 2009's Good Day and 2012's Here We Go. Also backing White are such longtime collaborators as keyboardist Philippe Saisse, bassist Nate Phillips, and percussionist Ramon Yslas. White's original approach to smooth jazz has worked quite well for him, and Smile is no exception. As the title implies, these are largely upbeat, brightly melodic tunes that showcase White's knack for airy, often Latin-influenced songs that soar on his crisp guitar lines. We also get plenty of groove-oriented, R&B-infused cuts like "Head Over Heels," "Hold Me Close," and the layered, trip-hop-infused "Beautiful Love." White also achieves a pleasant balance between the acoustic, electric, and electronic sounds on the album that never moves too far in any one direction. Instead, each song is deftly arranged with just the right instrumentation and improvisation to keep things interesting.
